Identities in Practice: A Trans-Atlantic Ethnography of Sikh immigrants in Finland and in California

"Identities in Practice draws a nuanced picture of how the experience of migration affects the process through which Sikhs in Finland and California negotiate their identities. What makes this study innovative with regard to the larger context of migration studies is the contrast it provides between experiences at two Sikh migration destinations. By using an ethnographic approach, Hirvi reveals how practices carried out in relation to work, dress, the life-cycle, as well as religious and cultural sites, constitute important moments in which Sikhs engage in the often transnational art of negotiating identities. NOT ALONE: DOING FIELDWORK IN THE COMPANY OF FAMILY MEMBERS

Reflecting on three case studies, this article provides an empirically grounded discussion of the challenges and opportunities that arise from doing fieldwork in the company of one’s children and spouse. The article highlights that during fieldwork, one’s private and professional lives are intermingled and the knowledge that one gains is always situated in particular ways. In this article, three female anthropologists elaborate on how they juggle multiple identity positions during fieldwork and how those negotiations and the presence and actions of accompanying family members affect the research material. Children and spouses may be useful during fieldwork but they may also disturb it or take it in unexpected directions. Acknowledging that fieldwork is part of life and that our everyday lives affect the fieldwork process is not a positive or negative thing per se; it is a part of the dynamics that can produce fruitful moments of serendipity

Tekonivelleikkausta edeltävän potilasohjauksen vaikutus postoperatiivisessa kivunhoidossa

Tämän opinnäytetyön tarkoituksena oli kuvata leikkausta edeltävän potilasohjauksen vaikutuksia tekonivelleikkauspotilaan postoperatiiviseen eli leikkauksen jälkeiseen kivunhoitoon. Tavoitteena oli tuottaa kliinisen hoitotyön ammattilaisille luotettava ja sisällöllisesti kattava kirjallisuuskatsaus siitä, millainen vaikutus leikkausta edeltävällä potilasohjauksella on tekonivelleikkauspotilaiden postoperatiiviseen kivunhoitoon. Katsauksessa käsiteltiin myös sitä, minkälaisia eroja erilaisilla ohjausmenetelmillä on suhteessa postoperatiiviseen kivunhoitoon. Opinnäytetyö toteutettiin yhteistyössä HUS Peijaksen sairaalan leikkausosasto L:n kanssa. Opinnäytetyön tutkimusmenetelmänä käytettiin kuvailevaa kirjallisuuskatsausta. Aineisto analysoitiin induktiivisella sisällönanalyysillä. Aineiston abstrahoinnin pohjalta nousi kolme pääluokkaa, jotka olivat preoperatiivisen ohjauksen menetelmät, preoperatiivisen ohjauksen vaikutus kivunhoitoon sekä preoperatiivisen ohjauksen vahvuudet ja heikkoudet. Tutkimuksen tulosten pohjalta ilmeni, että ennen tekonivelleikkausta tapahtuvalla potilasohjauksella ei ole kliinisesti tai tilastollisesti merkittäviä vaikutuksia postoperatiiviseen kivunhoitoon. Tutkimuksen tulos on merkittävä perioperatiivisen hoitotyön toteuttajille, sillä tutkimusten pohjalta voidaan todeta, ettei resursseja ole välttämättä kannattavaa ohjata pääasiassa preoperatiiviseen vaiheeseen. Jatkossa olisi suositeltavaa tutkia myös postoperatiivisen vaiheen potilasohjauksen vaikutusta tekonivelleikkauspotilaan leikkauksen jälkeiseen kipuun sekä pohtia olisiko resurssien suuntaaminen leikkauksen jälkeiseen vaiheeseen vaikuttavampaa. Tutkimuksessa vertailtiin useampaa eri potilasohjauksen menetelmää. Eri ohjausmenetelmillä ei ollut tulosten perusteella kliinisesti tai tilastollisesti merkittäviä eroja postoperatiivisen kivunhoidon kannalta. Potilaat saattoivat kokea tietyt menetelmät parempina kuin toiset, mutta ohjaustapojen väliset erot jäivät pieniksi. Vaikka ohjausmenetelmillä ei ollut suuria eroja suhteessa kivunhoitoon, on tärkeää huomioida potilaiden mielipiteet ja kokemukset ohjausmenetelmää valittaessa
